The Great Betrayal......the E-Reader

I blame my husband - the gadget-geek. At the mere mention of certain books being available only as e-books he hopped on his online rocket ship and ordered a used jetBook-lite from cyberspace. I'm already prejudice against it. I've been treating it like an unwelcome visitor. It's sitting here looking at me with it's blank stare, willing me to make it useful. So far I've only found two things about it appealing. I can load it up with the classics for free:Pride and Prejudice, Sherlock Holmes,Jane Eyre. It would be okay for a long plane ride I guess. But it didn't come with that great books smell, I can't thumb the pages and make that great, "Pffffth" sound. There are no pictures to refer to. I can't see my bookmark sticking out of the middle, challenging me to continue it's journey. So tell me, for the sake of those lonely e-books that were not given the privledge of paper by their publisher, should I make friends with "jet" or send him back into cyberspace?

  1. Save "Jet" for traveling. I would love to have one for vacations or business or whatever. I still prefer a book when I'm hunkered down at home, but the portability of the e-readers and the ability to take 4,000 books wherever you go could be fun.

  2. Since you don't get to travel much, how bout letting the boys use it for their reading? Kids like to do stuff on gadgets. Can you download their books?

  4. Oh boy, it always surprises me that I can feel such loathing for a piece of technology! I've blogged about this myself - how can you get the same experience from words on a screen as from feeling and smelling them? And I totally agree about the bookmark...such an important accessory for the avid reader! :) My husband says I'll give in soon but I plan to hold out as long as possible...

    Nice blog!

  5. Thanks Johanna! Well actually I FEEL like a betrayer for having one. I am slow to warm up to gadgets. It turns out this one is awful - can't get a new book on there to save my life! I decided to be open minded and try sharing a Kindle or Nook with my sons to see if it encourages more reading....we'll see....

Well the gadgets are kinda cool and take up less space, you can get material for less, etc...they still do not take the place of a good "real" book in your hands. And I too love the bookmark to see where I am at and push on to finish more chapters!
